We went on a fall scavenger hunt to our neighborhood park. I wanted to see how much interest my son would take in scavenger hunts. For the scavenger hunt, I did up a simple sketch of common items you find outside during fall (i.e. pine cones, twigs, leaves, etc.)

Fall Tree Fingerprint Art
This was such an awesome art project and my son had a blast doing it! This project was inspired by 'falling leaves' as we went for a walk. Here are some questions and discussions that we had to prompt curiosity and creative expression:
2. Upon returning home, prepare the materials. Help your child by placing his/her hand and arm on the paper. Keep the fingers open to make it look like tree branches. Now, the adult will trace around the arm and hand with a brown marker/pencil.
4. Continue making fingerprints with various fall colors until the painting looks like a fall tree.
5. Once the painting had dried, color the trunk of the tree or you can do this step before painting.
- What is a tree? A tree is a living thing that changes and grows. It grows for many years and changes according to the seasons (green in summer and orange/yellowish hues in fall).
- What are the parts of a tree? Parts of a tree consist of a tree trunk, roots, crown, branches, and leaves/fruits/flowers.
- What are leaves and why do they change color? What happens to leaves when they fall? Leaves are characteristics or part of a tree. They change color according to the weather. For example if they turn yellow from green, it signals that its time for them to fall off due to cold weather conditions. The leaves regrow in spring when the temperature turns warmer. After falling off, they turn to a dark brown color and then eventually become mulch, which is food for other living things (i.e. animals, insects, plants).
Materials Needed:
- Fall Color Water-paints like red, green and yellow
- Art Smock
- White art paper (8 1/2 by 14")
- Brown marker or pencil
- Paper towel or cloth
What to do:
1. First go for a walk to look at fallen leaves.
2. Upon returning home, prepare the materials. Help your child by placing his/her hand and arm on the paper. Keep the fingers open to make it look like tree branches. Now, the adult will trace around the arm and hand with a brown marker/pencil.
3. For this step you need a paper towel to transfer between colors. Have your child place an index finger at a time in the paint tray and then press it on the paper to make different colored leaves. Use a cloth or paper towel to wipe icky fingers when switching between colors.

3 Fall Art Projects
Today, we went on a scavenger hunt to collect fall leaves. We came back with tons of leaves. So, we did a couple of art projects with a little bit of paint, glue, leaves and creativity!
1. Leaf Collage - for this activity we glued leaves on paper so that we could paint around the leaves with splashes of fall colors. After the painting dried, we peeled the leaves off to create a leaf shape imprint.

2. Fall Abstract Art - for this activity we drew abstract shapes on paper with pencil and then painted them. After it dried we outlined the shapes with markers to give it a more defined look.

3. Fall Window - for this activity we wanted to create a picture frame with a painting inside. The painting represents the fall weather and grey clouds. So, we made a frame by outlining a large shape in the center of a page and glued fall leaves around that shape/frame. After the glue had dried, we painted inside the frame with fall weather colors (greys, purples, and blues).
