- What is a tree? A tree is a living thing that changes and grows. It grows for many years and changes according to the seasons (green in summer and orange/yellowish hues in fall).
- What are the parts of a tree? Parts of a tree consist of a tree trunk, roots, crown, branches, and leaves/fruits/flowers.
- What are leaves and why do they change color? What happens to leaves when they fall? Leaves are characteristics or part of a tree. They change color according to the weather. For example if they turn yellow from green, it signals that its time for them to fall off due to cold weather conditions. The leaves regrow in spring when the temperature turns warmer. After falling off, they turn to a dark brown color and then eventually become mulch, which is food for other living things (i.e. animals, insects, plants).
Materials Needed:
- Fall Color Water-paints like red, green and yellow
- Art Smock
- White art paper (8 1/2 by 14")
- Brown marker or pencil
- Paper towel or cloth
What to do:
1. First go for a walk to look at fallen leaves.
2. Upon returning home, prepare the materials. Help your child by placing his/her hand and arm on the paper. Keep the fingers open to make it look like tree branches. Now, the adult will trace around the arm and hand with a brown marker/pencil.
3. For this step you need a paper towel to transfer between colors. Have your child place an index finger at a time in the paint tray and then press it on the paper to make different colored leaves. Use a cloth or paper towel to wipe icky fingers when switching between colors.
