Preschool Science Experiment - Float and Sink

Objective: Classify and test materials on the basis of their buoyancy: materials that sink and float.

Before you begin the activity ask your child the science inquiry questions for him/her to get a better understanding of what they are about to do. Please hesitate to give any answers and let your child predict the answers. You can always revisit the questions at the end to clarify any misunderstandings.

Science Inquiry
  • What is Buoyancy?
  • What is float?
  • Why do some objects float?
  • What is sink?
  • Why do some objects sink?
  • Can you think of any other object that will sink or float?
  • Does the weight of an object determine whether it will float or sink?

Science Vocabulary: buoyancy, float, sink, heavy, light, weight

Materials
  • Tub or deep bucket
  • Water
  • Paper and pencil
  • Any objects (we used different types of play balls)

Procedure
1. Prepare for the experiment by filling the tub with water. Draw a chart/graphic organizer with three columns (one for the pictures/name of the object, one each for recording your findings of float or sink).

2. Talk about buoyancy (objects that stay afloat or sink depending in their density. Lighter objects will float in water that is denser. In other words, if the weight of the water is greater than the object, then things will float. And vice versa.)

3. Test by dropping the objects in the water. Then record your findings on the graphic organizer.

4. In the end, clean up together and have a discussion about what you did. This would be a good time to revisit the science inquiry questions. You may also do a journal drawing about "what we did today for science" entry.
